Success story · Sensata

A decade-long partnership powering global telematics innovation and 450K+ connected devices

Summary

A platform built before Sensata ever entered the picture

Modularis started working with SmartWitness in 2015. When Sensata acquired SmartWitness, they acquired much more than a product – they acquired a platform and a development partner with years of institutional knowledge.

Instead of ripping and replacing, Sensata doubled down.

We’re probably close to 10 years, if not more, working together with Modularis. That history has been hugely beneficial to our organization.

Longevity like that matters. Most outsourced dev relationships burn out after 18-36 months. This one has outlasted an acquisition, multiple product leaders, and a full organizational transition without a reset or rebuild.

What changed when SmartWitness became Sensata

What was originally a single telematics product is now part of a global portfolio. The architecture had to scale from a handful of devices to hundreds of thousands… without destabilizing the core.

  • Modularis handles the underlying platform: architecture, stability, scalability, reliability.
  • Sensata focuses on product-level innovation: features, commercial requirements, customer value.

This mix prevents the classic enterprise trap: hiring platform engineers to reinvent the wheel while features sit in backlog.

450,000+ connected devices… from zero

The most objective proof of value is scale. This platform went from nothing to 300,000 connected and running in production – and remained stable while it grew. That only works if the architecture is durable and continually iterated upon. Any shortcuts made in the early days would have shown up by now. They didn’t.

When issues do arise, escalation isn’t an argument – it’s action. That’s the difference between a contractor and a partner.

Elastic engineering without bloating the org chart

If Sensata tried to own 100% of the platform internally, they’d need to staff and carry developers year-round for peak-load scenarios that might only occur a few times a year. That’s not efficient for a global organization.

Modularis solves that problem: we’re already in the codebase, already trained, already aligned. When a high-stakes moment hits (a major release, a customer escalation, a platform upgrade), the team can expand instantly.

High value and long-term, not low cost

Modularis is not a discount vendor, and we don’t win on an hourly rate. Clients like Sensata choose us for stability, responsiveness, and engineering maturity… things that make or break a platform at scale. Anyone can sell talent.

If you compare five developers from Modularis to five from somewhere else, you’re going to get a higher quality of not just product, but relationship.

That’s why, ten years later, we’re still together – and still shipping.

Over nearly 10 years of working together, Modularis has continued to deliver high-quality, highly reliable, highly scalable solutions. Maintaining that level of consistency as both our companies have grown is not easy in any business… but they’ve done it.
